Date and Almond Butter Protein Shake - drinks recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 Medjool dates, pitted
  • 2 tbsp almond butter
  • 1 banana, frozen
  • 250 ml milk, any kind
  • 0.5 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.5 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 cubes ice, optional

Most protein shakes taste like chocolate-flavored punishment. This one tastes like a date caramel milkshake that happens to be full of protein and good fats.

Medjool dates are the secret — they have this natural caramel flavor that is ridiculously good when blended smooth. Combined with almond butter for protein and healthy fats, banana for creaminess, and milk, you get a shake that is thick, sweet, and satisfying without any protein powder or artificial sweetness.

I drink this after workouts or as a mid-afternoon pick-me-up when I need energy but do not want to eat a meal.

Pro Tips

  • Pit the dates. I have blended a pit into a shake exactly once and it was not pleasant.
  • Soak the dates in warm water for 5 minutes if they are not soft. This helps them blend smoother.
  • Use frozen banana for a thicker, colder shake without diluting with too much ice.
  • Almond butter with no added sugar or oil works best. Just almonds.

Serving

Blend until completely smooth and pour into a tall glass. Drink immediately. A sprinkle of cinnamon on top if you want to be fancy about it.
